Essay about Analysis of Wordsworth’s Surprised by Joy

Analysis of Wordsworth’s Surprised by Joy Death, like ink dropped in a glass of water, taints ones perception of life by coloring every experience with a sad shade of grief. In his poem, Surprised by Joy, William Wordsworth relates how a moment of joy caused him to remember the death of his four-year-old daughter, Catharine. The memory effectively crushed any positive feelings he had during his encounter with joy and replaced them with quilt and sadness. This sonnet, though Italian in rhyme scheme, abandons the typical conflict-to-resolution form of argument for one which begins with the desired end-result and progresses towards the heart of the problem. Throughout the sonnet, Wordsworth shifts from expressing raw emotions†¦show more content†¦However, his action is stopped short after the word transport with a caesuric dash and the exclamation, [o]h! with whom (2). The distressed Oh! and the accented whom give the end of the line just enough lift to suggest the question with whom? The answer, of course, is his daug hter whom he proceeds to address in line 3: [b]ut thee, deep buried in the silent tomb. Wordsworth expresses helpless disappointment in this statement because his daughter, the first person with whom he instinctively wants to share his joy, is dead. The enjambment of the lines rushes us to But thee where a caesura, combined with the repetition of the long, extended e sound in thee, deep buried, gives a sense of depth and finality to her death and effectively halts the energetic free-thought flow of the previous lines with its ominous tones. The unspoken b in tomb and swallowed t in silent contrast the power of the spondaic deep buried with a softer, sadder image of her grave state. Wordsworth adds that she is in [t]hat spot which no vicissitude can find (4). The word vicissitude, meaning a change in fortune for the worse, is an ironic description of her grave considering that death itself is one of the worst kinds of fortunes to befall a person. The fricative v sound followed by the hissing s sound in vicissitude give the word a sinister spin which implies, along with its misplaced polysyllabic elegance, his bitter and ironicShow MoreRelatedAmbiguity in Robert Frosts Works2796 Words   |  12 Pagesfeels doubtful whether or not he chose the best one. College And High School Comparisons And Essays

College And High School Comparisons And EssaysIn many instances, students, graduates, or business professionals with aspirations of heading to a four-year university will need to sit down with a college adviser and discuss which topics they should research first. They may be asked to do a 'compare and contrast' essay on the various academic disciplines. Most aspiring scholars quickly learn that academic jargon and broad concepts are an absolute no-no when writing an essay for an undergraduate class. Much more important are the tone and approach to the essay topic. The best practices for writing a comparative essay in college and high school often vary based on the student. For example, there are some topics that cannot be covered in one essay, such as comparative religions or comparative medicine. These topics should be broken up into smaller units, perhaps through a mini-essay, or even a group project. This way the student can focus on one specific area, and the topics they've already covered can be considered in light of that experience. In college and high school, however, the focus is often not on understanding the curriculum of the subject but rather on showcasing how well they can write an essay. With the exception of basic subjects such as math, there is usually a number of different examples, spanning the years, cultures, and levels of complexity. In addition to writing essays in college and high school, students will also find themselves spending a great deal of time reading, on topics that are closely related to the main curriculum. Reading guides, texts, and blogs is a great way to expand one's knowledge of a parti cular topic.College and high school students should definitely be encouraged to read widely and understand their assigned readings. One needs to expand upon what they already know, however, as a comparative essay in college and high school may be difficult due to the small amounts of time most students have for reading.Students are able to broaden their view of the world by doing college and high school comparative studies. A Sample Ap Macroeconomics Essay is Never EnoughSample Ap Macroeconomics Essay: The Economist, known by his preferred name of David Ricardo, is one of the most famous economists of all time. This has been due to many different reasons such as his contribution to Economic Theory, his impact on economic development and the impact of his work on the development of economics. If you have an economics degree, it is always worth studying him because he is still the best reference point in the field of Economics. In fact, because of the importance of his work, it is considered that the Basic Textbook Economics is all his work, but he wrote more than just that textbook. In other words, it is only through reading his writing that you get to understand why he was so influential in the field of Economics. So, now that you have a grasp of what this man really was and what his contribution to the field of Economics really meant, you can begin to understand how he approached his Macroeconomics Essay . The main idea behind his writing is to attempt to explain what the underlying principles of Economic Theory were, why they were chosen and how they contributed to the evolution of economics. There are many ways of approaching this, however the most popular one is the Adversarial Analysis. This means that he attempts to use the most recent research and take a look at the work of the opponents of his theory in order to understand where they went wrong.Once you understand the basic principles behind his work, you will understand that the Standard Textbook Economics that we read about in the classroom is essentially one that he borrowed from them. This means that the reason that many of the methods and models that we use today can be wrong, can be because they borrowed from the Standard Textbook Economics and thought that they understood it the best. The full source of all of the work that this man did cannot be found in the Standard Textbook because this is what he was able to pull fr om those who opposed his work. Instead, you can find the ideas that he used in his Ap Macroeconomics Essay by the sources that he went back to.The advantages of this approach is that it can be useful because he managed to bring back all of the original ideas, but the problem is that you need to keep track of who the people were who opposed his works. Even if you do not have any interest in economics, you should still go back and look at the work of those who were the ones who were the biggest critics of the works that he wrote. The question is this, if this is the case, how would you go about finding the best source of Ap Macroeconomics Essay? The Great Gatsby Argument Essay free essay sample

Viren Kumar Mrs. Parato AP Language and Composition March 2, 2013 Society’s Shadow Goals, objectives, targets, and ambitions are incentives that drive one to emerge from their comfort zone. Each individual, rich or poor, isolated or active, normal or abnormal, has a way to communicate with others and act in society based on personality. Most people want to be accepted by others to fit into society and be normal. There is always one person who has a different perspective than everyone elses and is uniquely considered an outcast. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, author F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays Jay Gatsby as an isolationist that is compelled to play ambiguous roles in society to obtain the green light across the channel, which in effect causes Gatsby to be placed in a nerve-racking situation. Society is a big influence on Gatsby and his actions. He is first introduced by Miss Baker. â€Å"[Nick] decided to call to him. We will write a custom essay sample on The Great Gatsby Argument Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Miss Baker had mentioned him at dinner, and that would do for an introduction† (Fitzgerald 20). Nick Caraway is a parallel with society because he is influenced by the thoughts and ideas of others that structure society. Since Miss Baker mentions Gatsby over dinner, Gatsby is seen as an interesting topic that needs to be explored. Jay, being an isolationist that he is, tries to hide himself from society by displaying motions hinting to people like Nick: â€Å"But [Nick] didn’t call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone† (20). Gatsby makes a â€Å"sudden intimation†, and it seems that Gatsby knows there is someone watching him and observing his every action, and in attempts to isolate himself and avoid being â€Å"[called] out to†, he makes a subtle allusion to the fact he wants to be left to himself (20). Thus society forces Gatsby to make the movement he makes by gossip and communication. Society’s observations in this passage will show to define many of Gatsby’s actions as the novel progresses. People have secrets in their life that can determine who they truly are; Gatsby has his own that are the power that compels him to act the way he does. Gatsby is carefully observed, and as he involuntarily glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock(Fitzgerald 21). Gatsby stares at a distant green light, which implies a special connection between the two. Considering â€Å"he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way† and that Gatsby â€Å"was trembling† his secret relation with the green light must be special because one does not tremble for any reason (Fitzgerald 21). There is an emotional bonding that may date back a long time. His yearning for the light—†stretched out his arms†Ã¢â‚¬â€is foreshadowing for the rest of the story where he struggles to obtain this light (21). An obvious tension between the relationship of Gatsby and the mysterious light is visible from the â€Å"trembling†, and this tension creates the ambiguousness in Gatsby’s role in the novel (21). Fitzgerald uses figurative language to introduce the protagonist, which exemplifies Gatsby’s mysterious appearance to emphasize his perplexing personality. As Nick is outside his home after a night with the Buchanan’s, a strange yet familiar silhouette appears just on the other side of his yard, in his neighbor’s yard. â€Å"The silhouette of a moving cat wavered across the moonlight† (Fitzgerald 20). This cat, in turn, is actually Jay Gatsby. Although, the comparison that Fitzgerald makes with Gatsby and the cat does serve as a tool to analyze his characteristics. Felines tend to walk in a stealthy manner at night, and they are very cautious about being watched. The comparison indicates that Gatsby was trying to be wary of his surroundings. Gatsby may be the figure, but noticing that there is no adjective on the noun, â€Å"figure†, whereas throughout the rest of the passage there are many adjectives to describe his surroundings, this anomaly provides Gatsby as a figure the appearance of an inexplicable figure (20). With his â€Å"hands in his pockets†, this signifies a sign of secrecy to illustrate his complex personality (20). Gatsby may have wanted to protect some secrets about the green light. Gatsby’s method of an introduction is an explanation of the ambiguous role he is going to play and the uncomfortable nature of his future situation. The Great Gatsby is a novel that depicts the role of Gatsby as one of an isolationist that is forced into an ambiguous role in society. Through misinterpretations of his actions, he is thought to have a misleading identity. As society observes the fascinating movements of Gatsby in his yard, the motions that Gatsby performs communicate thoughts of isolation to society, but later on in the passage, motions such as the stretching out of the trembling arms, represent predictions of society pulling Gatsby into societal problems and issues.
